Security incident
A gunman opened fire at the magnetometer screening area outside the Washington Hilton ballroom on the night of the 2026 White House Correspondents' Dinner, sprinted past the checkpoint, and reached the top of a staircase leading to the ballroom before being tackled. The President, First Lady, Vice President, and Cabinet officials were evacuated unharmed. Suspect Cole Tomas Allen, 31, of Torrance, California, is charged with attempting to assassinate the President of the United States — a count that carries up to life in prison. At an April 30 detention hearing, Allen conceded detention before Magistrate Judge Moxila A. Upadhyaya and remains in federal custody pending a preliminary hearing on Monday, May 11, 2026. New court filings detail a pre-attack selfie in his hotel room, repeated checks of the President's public schedule, and live-stream tracking of Mr. Trump's arrival at the venue.
