Security incident
A gunman opened fire at the magnetometer screening area outside the Washington Hilton ballroom on the night of the 2026 White House Correspondents' Dinner, sprinted past the checkpoint, and reached the top of a staircase leading to the ballroom before being tackled. The President, First Lady, Vice President, and Cabinet officials were evacuated unharmed. Suspect Cole Tomas Allen, 31, of Torrance, California, was indicted by a federal grand jury on May 5, 2026, on four counts — including attempting to assassinate the President of the United States, a count that carries up to life in prison. He pleaded not guilty to all charges at his May 11 arraignment and remains in federal custody, with a status conference set for June 29. The White House Correspondents' Association has rescheduled the dinner for Friday, July 24, 2026, at the Waldorf Astoria in Washington, and President Trump has accepted an invitation to speak.
